Water nourishes and gives birth to all things. It stands as the source of life, laying the foundation for all life activities on Earth. The Report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China proposed that we should attach great importance to the protection and utilization of water resources, urging us to adhere to the concept that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" from the strategic perspective of sustainable development for the Chinese nation. We must prioritize ecology, pursue green development, plan based on water resources, act according to water availability, tailor measures to local conditions, and take a holistic approach to upstream and downstream, mainstreams and tributaries, as well as both banks. Collective efforts are needed to protect water resources while promoting water conservation, water environment management, and water ecological protection and restoration. Water supply and drainage engineering stands as a critical component of production and life, was served as a significant manifestation of water's social cycle. In daily human production activities, water is extracted from natural water bodies, processed to meet standards for life and production use, and then, after being artificially treated to meet requirements, discharged back into natural water bodies, thus completing the social cycle of water. Exploring the scientific and engineering technical issues in this social cycle of water constitutes the primary task of water supply and drainage science and engineering, encompassing water extraction, purification, transportation, collection, treatment, recycling, and clean discharge. This field plays a vital role in meeting the water supply needs of enterprises, enhancing people's quality of life, and improving the human living environment. With the renovation of urban renewal, the development of smart water, the urban utility tunnel engineering, and the establishment of sponge cities, water supply and drainage science and engineering have taken on a pivotal role in safeguarding public health and sustainable urban environmental development. Urban water industry and the water industry have emerged as pillar industries for low-carbon, green, and sustainable socio-economic development.
